Mark Moreland, owner and personal trainer at Body Outfitters, believes three key factors dictate exercise success. “Consistency, hard work, and accountability,” he said. It’s these components that have led to an explosion in small group training, and the reason why Body Outfitters has added an additional 1,000 square feet of workout space.

Moreland, a lifelong resident of Zionsville and 1996 graduate of Zionsville Community High School, opened Body Outfitters in 2010 as a way to give back to the community where he was born and raised. “Body Outfitters allows me to positively influence and help the overall health of the community,” he said during a recent interview.

The business, located in the Village on Cedar Street, is a place for Zionsville residents to focus on fitness. Moreland and his staff provide half-hour and one hour, one-on-one and small group training opportunities designed to help individuals reach their health and wellness goals. Most people come in for strength training and weight management, though the Body Outfitters staff is always adapting based on each person’s unique needs.

A trend has developed and customers are looking to leverage the fellowship of exercising together. “Group strength training workouts are part of the changing fitness landscape,” Moreland said. “The benefits are that you still get much of the individual training and one-on-one attention, but in a group setting, which provides more accountability but is a less expensive workout.”

Small groups are formed around people’s similar schedules, goals, and fitness levels. “What’s great about these groups,” said Moreland, “is the way they develop their own personas. The group of women who come in at 5:30 in the morning are different from those that arrive at 6:00 in the evening. Communities have grown from within these groups. They give themselves group names and even have t-shirts printed. By working hard – laboring, struggling, and, ultimately, succeeding together – a common bond is created.”

Moreland said some groups come in together but that’s unique. “Usually a couple of people establish a group time, and then others jump in. While we encourage group members to commit to a time slot so they work with the same trainer and group consistently, there is the option to move between groups if the need arises in their schedules,” he explained.

To ensure members experience the full value of the group session, Body Outfitters maintains a ratio of one trainer for every four participants. “We’ve found that’s a strong proportion to ensure each person gets the attention they need within their group experience.”

Though the trends in the fitness industry are constantly changing, Moreland said the core tenets of exercise and wellness remain. “We adhere to the concepts of baseline physiology. It still comes down to hard work, appropriate nutrition, and rest.”
