Vintage-inspired, French, shabby chic, cottage, industrial, European – it’s hard to pigeon-hole the decorative style of ReStyled, 21 S. Rangeline Rd, Carmel. If you like any of those styles, you’re sure to feel very comfortable in the store, which features a myriad of accessories and painted furniture pieces. Looking for a unique focal point for your otherwise ho-hum room? You’ll likely find it here.

Back in 2010 Connie Oderkirk, an interior decorator for 25 years, realized that her 165-year old historic home could not hold any more furniture, yet she still enjoyed shopping at auctions, flea markets and estate sales. Meanwhile, her daughter-in-law Sasha Hostetter was also enjoying those same sales and also painting and repurposing pieces, so they decided to go into business together. “We want to inspire people,” commented Connie. “We are such a throw-away society; we want people to realize they can have a beautiful home that is affordable with repurposed or restyled pieces.” “And,” chimed in Sasha, “you can add a uniqueness to your home, as well.”

Soon the pair was introduced to Chalk Paint®, a brand of decorative paint developed by Annie Sloan which is sold only in small local shops. Today, they are one of just four retailers in the state who carry it. “We were already painting and repurposing furniture,” said Sasha. “We can do so much more with this paint. It can’t be beat for durability, beauty of the finish and ease of use.”

Thanks to Pinterest, many DIYers are familiar with Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint®. It is made in the US, is water-based, has a low VOC and is easily cleaned with soap and water. It is fast-drying and has bonding agents for a hard, durable finish and beautiful patina. Most popular is the fact that you don’t prime or sand the piece before painting it!

There really is an Annie Sloan, and ReStyled also sells her decorating books. Sloan, who lives in England, created 31 (currently) colors that are on trend, yet based on late 18th century historic places like the palace of Versailles. Of course, mixing colors creates a nearly infinite number of other options. Once a piece is painted, a protective coat of wax is applied which also adds to the patina of the piece. Suddenly Grandma’s old buffet is a gorgeous updated piece that you can proudly place in your entryway.

If you have furniture to update or restyle, register for a workshop on “Chalk Paint® Essentials” or “Refunk Your Junk” and you can actually work on your piece in-store. Some people have even brought kitchen cabinets, to get started on new ways to update the finish. In addition, ReStyled occasionally takes in custom work for those who are not the DIY type.

If you can’t make it into the store, be inspired by their Pinterest boards at ‘ReStyledPaint’ or their website at www.ReStyledFurniture.com. And, mark your calendar for October 10-12 for their Barn Sale, an outdoor vintage and antique marketplace in Westfield. The sale features 20+ juried vendors that complement everything ReStyled does.
